About the artist

Bruce McLean is a conceptual artist whose sculptures, performances, and painting humorously skewer the pretensions and conventions of the art world. McLean began his training at Glasgow School of Art, then continued at St. Martin’s School of Art, where he and his classmates revolted against what they saw as the faculty’s tired formalism. By age 27, McLean had received a solo exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London, using the occasion to stage a satirical daylong “retrospective.” He began to focus on painting in the mid-1970s, parodying the styles of the day, and went on to become the head of Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art. Perhaps ironically, McLean has received numerous prestigious awards, including the John Moores Painting Prize and the Sainsbury Award for Sculpture. His art can be found in major private and public collections.
