A very charming set of three graduated size antique Chinese porcelain bowls hand painted with the 'Hundred Boys' decoration. These date to the late Qing Dynasty, most likely from the second half of the 19th century. Each bowl is hand-painted in the Famille Rose (fencai 粉彩) palette, with lively scenes of children playing in a garden surrounded by plants, rocks, and garden furniture.
The subject matter, often referred to as the “boys at play” motif, was a popular theme in Qing porcelain and symbolized prosperity, happiness, and the wish for many sons.
The bowls graduate in size, fitting neatly one into the other, which makes them especially attractive as a set. The colors are fresh and vibrant, with soft pinks, greens, yellows, purples, and reds all delicately applied. The painting style is typical of export porcelain from Jingdezhen, the major center of Chinese porcelain production during this period. Each base is unmarked with the expected unglazed foot rim, another characteristic of nineteenth-century wares made for export.
Condition is very good for their age. The enamels show only light wear from handling, and I can see no cracks or major chips. These pieces are well over 130 years old, so minor age-related imperfections are to be expected, but overall they display beautifully.
