Here we have a fabulous example of a 19th Century Meiji Period Antique carved wood Netsuke from Japan which is signed by the well known carver Sukenori (1887-1955), 亮則 The Netsuke is of a highly amusing and animated grotesque face, either of a Nio (temple guardian) or a Oni (demon). He has a wonderful expression with great hand carved detailing to the eyes, nose & mouth and great use of wrinkles to add a sense of drama to the piece, you can imagine the steam coming out of his ears! This level of detailing is very typical of works by Sukenori. The piece has a lot of character and the carving is of superb quality. This is a great piece for any Netsuke collectors or collectors of Meiji period Japanese works. Condition: The piece is in excellent condition, it has a superb colour & patina typical of a Netsuke from this period.
